Up for auction is is one of the most traditional ’36 Ford three window coupes available on Ebay. It is owned by long time Hot Rodder and nostalgia buff “Axle” – a California based show promoter / organizer. If fiberglass Street Rods covered in Billet are your fancy you may want to look elsewhere as this may not be for you. If you are part of the ever growing “diehards” that appreciates true nostalgic Hot Rods and Customs please read on.

What you see in front of you is the real McCoy. A 1936 Ford three window coupe that has been in California for a very long time. This car is all Henry Ford steel and there are no aftermarket body parts anywhere. All fenders, running boards, hoods, body,grille, doors, and deck lid are real and original to the entire car. Nothing was added!

HISTORY: The car was found in Whittier California in the winter of 2005. It had sat dormant since 1962 ! The owner broke the axle and parked it ever since. When found, the car had old brittle Navy blue & white tuck & roll upholstery , custom made long shackles to lower the car a couple of inches, and on both A-Pillars there were lead filled holes where spot lights went . Also, in the trunk was one custom rusty 40′s ribbed 16 inch hub cap. You could also see the outline where rear fender skirts once were. The cars brake system was improved to 1940 Ford Hydraulic units some time during that period as well, and lastly, when the door panels were removed the inside doors were filled with newspaper, and upon carefully unravelling a part of it the newspaper showed “LOS ANGELES TIMES – 1949″ . So, its fair to say that the car was a very mile Custom / Rod from the late 40′s / 50′s. The car also had a later 8BA Flathead engine from 1949-1953, and other than headers it was pretty much stock.

The car was completely blown apart down to the bare frame. The body , hood, grille, and many other parts were carefully media blasted to start body work and reassembly . A leaky house roof dripped water on top of the car that was covered with soggy blankets, so there were a couple areas of rust that had built up over the years. Fabricator Fabian Valdez of Vintage Hammer “English Wheeled” new sheet metal and welded them to the effected area’s . Afterwards final body work and the build was completed by owner at home .High build Poly Primer then a custom mix ( by Stan Betz) of medium blue Urethane was applied. 2 piece Hood top was louvered by Eric Vaughn .

ENGINE: The engine that was installed in this beauty is a work of art. Another 8BA only this is totally disguised to appear itself as an earlier Flatty such as a 59AB ! Early intake, early heads, 2 bolt timing cover, early “Crab” Mallory distributor , etc. Engine has a Merc crank that was stroked to 4 1/8 . Bore is put at 3 5/16. Pistons are forged aluminum units. Block was ported and also relieved . An Isky 77B camshaft was installed – Lift 325. Duration 260. Lobe center 111. Johnson adjustable lifters help keep everything in sync. Valves are 1.660 – Intake , and 1.555 – Exhaust. Compression ratio is 9.3 to 1. Total, this engine creates 284 cubic inches. Custom made headers were put on the car along with a set of rare chrome exhaust cut outs from the 1950′s. 1 1/2 inch straight dual exhaust with chrome “pee shooter” tips exit the rear. A Thickstun 2 carb hi rise intake manifold was polished and installed. Dual 97 Strombergs with rare Scot Tops set on the intake. Polished Offy heads finish everything off.

TRANSMISSION: A 1939 Ford unit was installed after being rebuilt by early Ford specialist Bill Popp. The flywheel was media blasted then resurfaced . A brand new clutch , throw-out bearing, and pressure plate was installed.

REAR END: The rear is original to the car . The complete unit (drum to drum) was taken to Bill Popp for a total rebuild, and upon inspection a rare set of 3.54 gears were discovered . This makes driving on the freeway very nice !

SUSPENSION ~ BRAKES: A true 4 inch dropped axle by Chassis Engineering was installed along with a mono leaf. Early Ford F100 shock mounts were bolted to the front frame rails and gas shocks installed. The original unsplit ’36 wishbones were kept for the car. The entire 1940 Ford hydraulic brakes were rebuilt but new master cylinder and wheels cylinders added. To lower the rear we opted to straighten the rear crossmember almost horizontally flat. The rear spring is stock which gives an incredibly nice ride.

WHEELS ~ TIRES: 16 inch 1940 Ford “solids” were sand blasted and powder coated gloss black. smooth stainless beauty rings and 1941 Ford “beehive” caps installed. Firestone 5.25/5.50 x 16′s are mounted up front, and 7.50×16′s are mounted at the rear.

INTERIOR: The inside closely resembles what was once in the car during the 1940′s and 50′s. Done in Navy BLue & White tuck & roll , its very comfortable, Carpet was installed through the entire car (including trunk) and has white piping and shifter boot. All garnish moldings were sand blasted and rechromed . Also chromed were the windshield frame, air vent control knob, bumpers, guards, and many misc screws, nuts, bolts. The window regulators were thoroughly cleaned , rebuilt, and regreased. All the glass is brand new from Jacks Glass – Bloomington, California , and new felt / rubber installed . All windows/windshield open and close with ease.

WIRING: Completely redone using reproduction cloth covered wiring around the engine compartment. All running lights, brake lights, head lights, dash lights, dome lights, speedo are in working order.

MEDIA: As stated previously, this is a very well known car and is a multi show winner in the Traditional / Custom Car Culture world. It was featured in “HOT RODS” book by Alan Mayes – 2010. It graced the covers of Car Culture Deluxe magazine – December 2008. A huge article about it was featured in Street Rodder – February 2009. It was featured in Rod & Custom – July 2008, it has been featured in European and Japanese automotive publications many times, and lastly, was featured in Swank magazine when freelance photo journalist Frank De Blase photographed world famous model Tyler Stevens inside the car in a classy “black & white” retro style.

Guys, we could go on an on about this well known car. It literally has the BEST stance of all 1936 Ford three window Hot Rods, and is the reason why it rapidly gained media attention as well as popularity amongst fellow Rodders. It epitomizes the “Less is More” theory with is overall look , stance, and feel. With its early drivetrain , it has been an extremely reliable car, and has been driven to Las Vegas , Central California, as well as all over Southern California. This is not a show car where mirrors can be placed under it , but it is a very clean and rare Hot Rod that is driven on freeways and streets of the west coast in style.

Nice custom, The color for me is not great and I would change out the Steering wheel, but if I look past that I really like the car.

The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulia Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the line, thanks to its 1600cc version of the venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard car, and as is often the case with Italian cars, the latest models are the most technically developed.

This particular blends the pleasing aesthetics of the earlier “750 Series” chassis with its shorter wheel base, hood spear, and smaller rear tail lights, with the slightly larger and more powerful 1600cc Giulia engine, and 5-speed transmission. While originally delivered as a single carburetor “Normale” model, this example has been upgraded with Veloce twin Weber carburetors, and from the fantastic, free revving engine note, Veloce specification cams and high compression pistons as well.

Best described as a driver quality example, with fresh paint to similar standards, this car will appear to the Alfa enthusiast with a knack for light restoration. The car runs and drives, with very good power, little or no smoke, excellent brakes, good clutch, and a function transmission with light bearing noise. The suspension and steering box are both good. The body and chassis are solid, with no major rust or rust repairs evident. Cosmetically, the car has a uniform driver quality appearance. The chrome, paint, interior, engine bay, and trunk are all satisfactory. The car is generally original in its appearance, including the steering wheel, wheels and hub caps, seat upholstery, gauges and switch gear.

As is so often the case with Italian cars of this era, improvements are possible in several areas. The doors could be adjusted to shut better, as could the convertible top. The motor mounts may be somewhat tired, as the carburetors touch the inner fender well at idle. The fuel gauges does not appear to read accurately, which is common to Alfa Spiders. There may be other minor mechanical defects that we are not aware of, and accordingly, we welcome pre-purchase inspections. We have taken this information into account when pricing the car. The car is sold “as-is”, in its current trim.

While we do not have considerable background on the previous history or restoration work, this example’s structurally solid nature, early build date, attractive color combination, and outstanding specification will make it an appealing purchase for the Alfa enthusiast looking for an inexpensive, event eligible car, with an option to make some value added improvements during his ownership.
